2024 is the year dedicated to lots of experiments in terms of skincare and makeup. Lately, I have been obsessed with the no-highlighter look on myself and my clients. Here, Beautyspade teaches you how to highlight your face without makeup. You’ll learn a few tips for keeping your skin looking smooth, and glowy. Stash your makeup bag and settle in to learn how to highlight your face with skincare.

First and foremost, if you are starting with skincare or makeup, always begin with a clean canvas. To start, I recommend washing your face with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. The pH-balanced formula also helps maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier. I recommend using it with lukewarm water, as hot water can strip your skin, leaving it feeling dry and uncomfortable.

Tip #1

Invest in Dewy Serums/Facial Oils:

Dewy serums and facial oils are the cornerstone of a skincare routine aimed at achieving a radiant complexion. Generally, the goal of a highlighter is to grab the attention of the high points of the face. With makeup, it can be easily achieved with shimmery, light-reflecting products to make skin appear radiant instantly. But highlighting your face with skincare can help in achieving a more natural-looking glow. Skincare products are generally packed with nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and botanical extracts, which work together to hydrate the skin, improve texture, and impart a natural glow. When selecting a serum or facial oil, look for lightweight formulas that absorb easily into the skin.

Apply a few drops of serum or a small amount of facial oil onto clean, damp skin before moisturizing to lock in hydration and create a smooth canvas for makeup application.

Tip #2

Loads of Moisturizers:

Moisturizers are necessary if you are after dewy radiant skin. Hydration is key to achieving luminous skin, and moisturizers are an excellent way to replenish lost moisture and create a plump, dewy complexion. After cleansing and toning your face, opt for moisturizers that are rich in emollients such as shea butter, glycerin, and ceramides, as these ingredients help to seal in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier.

Serums alone cannot be enough to achieve that glowy radiant skin. Moisturizers help boost elasticity and plump the skin to help reveal a smoother appearance over time. Massage a generous amount of moisturizer onto the face and neck using gentle, upward strokes, focusing on areas prone to dryness. Allow the moisturizer to fully absorb into the skin before proceeding with makeup application to ensure a smooth and radiant finish.

Finally, don’t forget Sunscreens to avoid early aging. Invest in a good SPF of a minimum of 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Tip #3

Hydrating/Illuminating Primers:

Primers are an essential step in any makeup routine as they help to create a flawless base and extend the wear of your makeup. When aiming for a luminous complexion, opt for hydrating or illuminating primers. These primers often contain light-reflecting particles or hydrating ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which help to blur imperfections and impart a subtle glow.

Apply a pea-sized amount of primer onto the face and blend it evenly using your fingertips or a makeup sponge, focusing on areas where you want to enhance radiance such as the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and brow bone.

Tip #4

Cream/Liquid-Based Makeup:

Traditional powder-based makeup products can sometimes appear flat and matte on the skin, which is why many beauty enthusiasts are opting for cream or liquid-based alternatives. Many prefer cream or liquid makeup for a radiant look. Cream blushes, liquid highlighting, and tinted moisturizers are popular choices for adding glow to the skin without looking heavy or cakey. They add glow without appearing heavy or cakey. Warm up the product with your fingertips before application. Blend seamlessly using a damp makeup sponge. Focus on areas where light naturally hits for a youthful appearance.

If you love a more glazed highlighting effect stick to the textures like Balms, Creams. Creamy and effortless to apply, like the powder it creates an instant luminosity that’s buildable and blendable, depending on how statement or natural you want to go.

Tip #5

Translucent Powders:

While translucent powders are often associated with setting makeup and controlling shine, they can also be used to enhance the skin’s natural radiance when applied strategically.

Instead of dusting powder all over the face, use a fluffy brush to lightly sweep translucent powder only on areas prone to excess oiliness, such as the T-zone. This will help to set your makeup without dulling the skin’s luminosity or emphasizing dry patches. Alternatively, you can use a damp makeup sponge to press translucent powder onto the high points of the face, such as the cheekbones and cupid’s bow, to set cream or liquid-based makeup and create a subtle glow.

Bottom Line:

Achieving a within-glow complexion doesn’t necessarily require layers of highlighter or shimmering powders. By investing in efficient skincare products and the right makeup techniques, you can achieve a natural, lit-from-within glow that enhances your natural beauty. Whether you’re a skincare enthusiast or a makeup lover experimenting with new trends, embracing the concept of “Skincare as the New Highlighter” can help you achieve the radiant complexion you’ve always dreamed of.
