A natural makeup look is very easy to achieve enhancing your features while keeping the look fresh, dewy, and effortless. I love a minimalistic approach to makeup, allowing my skin to breathe while still looking polished. I do my skincare religiously followed by concealers for hiding imperfections and coverage. You can also go with BB creams or skin tints if you like to apply them on the full face without feeling heavy. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how I achieve my natural makeup look, including the products and techniques I swear by.
1. Tips on Skincare
The foundation of any makeup look is great skincare. Before applying any makeup, I make sure my skin is prepped and hydrated. I start with a gentle cleanser to remove any impurities or excess oils. Washing my face with chilled water to depuff or even sometimes dip my face in ice-cold water for a few seconds before makeup. It reduces puffiness which might peak through after makeup. Hydration is key for a natural look, I spray rose water which gives me a fresh start and then I apply a lightweight ceramide moisturizer to ensure my skin is plump and glowing. Sun protection is non-negotiable. A broad-spectrum SPF (ideally with a non-greasy finish) ensures my skin is protected and ready for makeup.
2. Prime for Longevity/hydration
Some might feel primer is unnecessary. But for me, primer works wonder if you have dry skin. To keep my makeup looking fresh all day, I apply a lightweight, hydrating primer. It helps smooth out my skin texture and gives a soft, luminous base without feeling heavy.
3. Even Out the Complexion
For a natural look, less is more when it comes to coverage. Instead of a full-coverage foundation, I use a BB cream or tinted moisturizer that matches my skin tone perfectly. For covering dark circles, I opt for a corrector which helps in evens out my complexion before concealer. I apply a creamy concealer only on areas that need extra coverage, such as under my eyes, around my nose, or any blemishes. Concealer application is also a very strategic part of my makeup. Putting concealer very close to the lash line might enhance fine lines which can make you look like you have bags under your eyes, or emphasize them if they’re already present. The trick is to dot it below the lower lash line concentrating in the inner corner. I blend it well with a small damp beauty blender or my favorite concealer brush for a seamless finish.
4. Soft, Defined Brows
Natural brows are a must for this look. I use a brow pencil to fill in sparse areas lightly, keeping the strokes feathery for a natural effect. Then, I brush through my brows with a spoolie to blend the product and shape them. To set everything in place, I apply a clear brow gel to keep my brows looking polished yet natural. Currently, I am obsessed with the tinted brow gel, which also offers natural coverage and color.
5. Subtle Eye Makeup
I keep my eye makeup soft and simple to maintain a natural vibe. I apply a light, neutral-toned eyeshadow (a soft brown or peach) on my eyelids to give a slight definition. Eyeshadow sticks are your best friend when it comes to natural makeup. I skip heavy eyeliner and instead go with the baby wing in the outer corner. I also love to extend the inner corner with the eyeliner pen. No false eyelashes for me instead I focus on curling my lashes to open up my eyes. A coat of lengthening mascara gives my lashes a natural lift and definition without clumping.
6. Add a Flush of Color
I opt for a cream blush in a peachy or rosy tone for a healthy, radiant glow, applying it to the apples of my cheeks and blending it upwards towards my temples. It gives a natural flush that mimics my skin’s appearance when I’m naturally glowing. If I want extra radiance, I dab a bit of liquid highlighter on the high points of my face—cheekbones, brow bone, and the bridge of my nose—for a subtle glow.
7. Natural Lips
For the lips, I keep it simple. I usually opt for a tinted lip balm that gives my lips a hint of color while keeping them hydrated. It’s perfect for a fresh, barely-there look. creamy hydrating lipsticks are my new favorite.
8. Set and Go
Finally, I set everything in place. Instead of powder (which can make the skin look cakey), I use a dewy setting spray to lock in the makeup while maintaining the natural glow. I only apply powder under my eyes to set the concealer in place.
