While makeup trends constantly evolve, it’s evident that innovative ways to express ourselves through makeup are always emerging. Every year brings forth a set of thrilling makeup trends. While some manage to endure and transition into the next year, others linger without significant change. New trends always spread an eagerness to try and explore.
From cloud skin to siren eyes, a few of my favorite makeup trends that set their place in 2023 and continue to blow our minds in 2024 are listed below.
Underpainting Technique:
For those who don’t know what underpainting is, This makeup trend entails applying foundation as the concluding step in your base makeup routine, following contour, blush, and concealer. Despite its recent surge in popularity on social media, it’s far from a fad. In reality, underpainting has been a closely guarded secret among makeup artists for an extended period. Though I feel a bit of product wastage in this trend who cares, the final results are mind-blowing.
“Cloud Skin” came in
One of the standout makeup trends of 2023 which will continue in 2024, is the emergence of cloud skin. This trend focuses on achieving a soft, dreamy complexion reminiscent of fluffy clouds. Glow-up judge and Global senior artist for MAC Cosmetics, Dominic Skinner says, ‘The trend occupies the space between matte and glowy radiance, meant to mimic the way clouds can look when the sun is shining through them, giving an almost-illuminated appearance to the fluffy white masses.’ People who are fascinated with glass skin and unfortunately have oily skin can go with this finish.
In contrast to the bold and vibrant trends, 2024 has also embraced the beauty of simplicity with the rise of barely-there makeup. Tinted moisturizers, Skin Tints, are the go-to choices for those who prefer a more understated look. ‘Clean Makeup Looks’ emphasizes the beauty of individuality and self-acceptance, encouraging people to embrace their natural beauty with confidence.
Faux Freckles
Undoubtedly, the most harmless and fun Genz makeup trend will follow us in 2024. Promotes skin positivity by making people aware of the facts about different skin. I have tried this trend and find it fascinating. Instead of concealing natural freckles, people are now creating them using makeup products like brow pencils and fine-tipped brushes. The faux freckles trend adds a touch of whimsy to any makeup look, providing a youthful and fresh appearance.
Food-themed makeup
TikTok continues to be a driving force in shaping makeup trends, and 2024 is no exception. Enter ‘strawberry makeup’, and ‘latte makeup’ trends that took TikTok by storm, featuring soft pink and red hues reminiscent of ripe strawberries on one side and brown neutral tones to compliment coffee and tea addiction on the other. Makeup artists and influencers are creating captivating looks inspired by these food themes.
Doll-like lower lashes
Drawing your eyelashes? What? Are you kidding? Creating that doll-like lower lashes was a big lash trend last year and I feel it’s still going to continue and rock in 2024. Selena Gomez tik tok trend for that doll like lower lashes is a big game changer. This bold and unconventional trend involves intentionally clumping mascara and drawing more fake lashes for a dramatic, edgy look.
Purple Blush
Confession Alert: I have a little obsession with anything purple. Whether it’s anything lavender or lilac, I will try for sure. Continuing with that obsession, the purple blush trend has to be my favorite. Experts say it has more to do with purple’s position on the Colour Wheel. It sits opposite yellow, which gives it a brightening effect on the face. Keeping my purple obsession aside, there is something undeniably flattering about the color as a blush. Girls! Take a break from your pinks and reds and see what purple suits your complexion the best. I bet you won’t regret it.
Lip Sensations
Clinique has introduced Black Honey, a deep dark raisin color that suits and is approved by every skin tone. Black Honey is a perfectly calibrated blend of blue, red, and yellow pigments in a creamy, balmy base (not quite a lipstick, but more than a sheer gloss), that melts into your lips and bumps up their color.
One more trend taken over the internet is Cherry Cola lips. 2024 has seen a sweet sensation take over lips – the irresistible flavor of cherry cola. Makeup brands have introduced lip products with delicious scents and Flavors, adding a sensory element to the beauty routine. From lip balms to glosses, beauty influencers are indulging in the delightful taste of cherry cola while flaunting their pouts. The trend brings back the dark brown burgundy lip liners of the 90s combining it with the cherry red color followed with a clear gloss or even a pink sheer gloss to complete the look. 😊
Siren eye trend
What are Siren’s eyes? Siren eyes are one of the eye makeup techniques to elongate and lift your eyes with an easy liner shape that is not only captivating but also suits every eye shape. “Siren eyes” was made popular in a tutorial by Danielle Marcan, who gave a name to the technique that involves creating a smudgy cat eye using liner and/or eyeshadow. These are slightly dramatic, darkest around the rims of the eye, and soften out when it goes upward and outward. Here is my tutorial for the reference.
